RHP Jessica Mattia set a new Lady Trojans softball school record throwing 21 strike-outs in a 3-0 win versus the Lady Lions of Lincoln University on Monday, March 19 in Petersburg, VA. The Lady Trojans defeated the Lady Lions also in game two, 7-4.
Mattia faced twenty-four Lady Lions and struck-out a new Virginia State University record of twenty-one batters. She surrendered one hit, walked none, and had one fly-out picking up her tenth win of the season.
VSU jumped on the Lady Lions early with two runs in the first inning. Outfielder Sharron Lipford led the Lady Trojans with two hits in game one. Lipford hit a triple in the fifth inning then scored a run on outfielder Ashley Bushrod’s double to center field. The Lady Trojans went ahead 3-0, as Jesiica Mattia continued to throw strikes, pitching her best game as a VSU pitcher.
In the night-cap, LHP Caitlyn Underhill took the mound for VSU. She went a full two innings, giving Mattia some much needed rest. Jessica Mattia returned to her throne in the third inning trailing 3-0, to the Lady Lions. She continued her dominance striking-out twelve more Lady Lions picking up another win.
The Lady Trojans’ Endya Bailey hit an RBI triple to left field in the second inning, that scored infielder Jameshia Smith. In the third inning, VSU’s offense exploded for four runs on six hits to rally ahead of the Lady Lions, 5-3. They added another two runs in the fourth inning on two hits and one fielding error by the Lincoln defense.
“Well with our pitching, Jessica Mattia has really been the nucleus of the team at this point, handling the mound. She had quite a few strike-outs and I think she broke a school record. She was definitely positive on the mound for us, keeping Lincoln from hitting” said head softball coach Torrie Lashley.
The Lady Trojans will head to Lynchburg, VA on March 24 to face the Lady Dragons at 2:00 p.m.
