JACKSON, Miss. – Strong pitching, defense and timely hitting helped Alabama State University earn a doubleheader sweep over Jackson State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division baseball match-up on Saturday at Braddy Field.

ASU (26-17, 15-5) won game one 4-2, before winning game two 3-2. The wins moved the Hornets into a first- place tie atop the division with JSU (21-18, 15-5).

Game 1 – T.J. Renda (8-0) held JSU scoreless for 8 2/3 innings to remain unbeaten on the season. He scattered 10 hits, four of them in the ninth while striking out three. He threw 127 pitches, 83 for strikes.

With two on and two out, Armando Ruiz came on to get the final out for his second save of the season.

Alabama State scored in the first inning for the sixth time in its last seven games. Leo Rojas doubled down the left field line with one out, and advanced to third as Richard Gonzalez reached on an error. Waldyvan Estrada's single to left field scored Rojas for a 1-0 lead.

The Hornets added three runs in the eighth. Gonzalez singled to right field, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Estrada. Dillon Cooper's single on the first pitch to left center scored Gonzalez to double the ASU lead. Dexter Price then hit an infield single, and he and Gonzalez moved to second and third on a groundout.

Einar Muniz's two-run single to left center on a 2-0 pitch scored both runners for a 4-0
lead.

Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with one run scored and Muniz hit 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Hornets at the plate.

Alexander Juday (1-3) picked up the loss pitching a complete game. He posted three strikeouts giving up 11 hits and four earned runs.
Charles Tilery and Curtis Stephen led the Tigers' rally attempt in the bottom of the ninth. Both recorded a RBI scoring in Jose Criz and Bryce Taylor. All four players manufactured just one hit.

Game 2 – The Hornets' three runs in the second inning were enough to hold off the Tigers to pick up the second game of the doubleheader.

tarting pitcher Joel Alvira (5-0) allowed just three hits and one run, walking five, and striking out four, in six innings on the bump. Jorge Pantoja earned the save.

In the second, Cooper led off the inning with an infield single for ASU. Following a sacrifice bunt and a foul out, Muniz singled to right center field to score Cooper.

Marcus Swint reached on a throwing error and advanced to second on the play, as Muniz scored all the way from first base. Amion then singled to center to score Swint for a 3-0 ASU lead.

Amion finished 2-for-5 with a RBI. Muniz finished with a RBI, one hit and one run scored. Cooper and Swint notched a run scored

JSU scored one run in the second on a Jose Cruz sacrifice fly to score Malcolm Tate. The Tigers cut the deficit in the seventh after Nick Marginy's RBI single to center field drove in Fred Hampton to capp the scoring at 3-2 in favor of ASU.

Malcolm Tate led JSU at the plate going 3-for-4 with one run scored.

In the bottom of the ninth, Pantoja stepped on the mound for ASU to relieve Armando Ruiz. With two runners on base and no outs for JSU, Pantoja threw a strike out and the Hornets retired the final two hitters. JSU left two stranded on base to end the game.

Vincent Anthonia (5-3) was charged with the loss pitching a complete game giving up one earned run. He also tallied two strikeouts.

BATON ROUGE, La. - Southern University posted wins in both games on Saturday to start the Southwestern Athletic Conference weekend series against Grambling State at Lee Hines Field.

In the first game, Jesse Holiday (5-2) went 7.1 innings for SU (17-15, 12-5) keeping GSU (13-25, 7-13) without an earned run. He struck out 11 and walked one.

The Jaguars went ahead 1-0 on a groundout by Marcus Tomlin that scored Jeremy Lopez from third, then took a 2-0 lead when Derrick Hopkins connected in the seventh for his third homer of the year.
Kevin Williams went 3-for-4 with a double.

GSU's lone score came in the eighth when Edwin Drexler, who had advanced to third on an error by Tyler Kirksey in left field, scored on Darren Farmer’s sacrifice fly. Santos Saldivar had just replaced Holiday on the mound.

Farmer went 1-for-2 at the plate. Brock Baker (2-4) took the loss for the Tigers apperaing in seven innings with one strikeout.

In game two with the score knotted at 2-2 in the 11th inning, SU's Gavin Webster doubled to center field to drive in Brian Rowry to end the game.

Webter finished 2-for-5 at the plate. Kevin Williams led the Jaguars with two RBI after singling to center field to score Marcus Tomlin and Tyler Kirksey.

Josh Powell (3-0) was credited with the win after relieving Jose DeLeon. DeLeon pitched 10 innings giving up one hit while striking out 11.

GSU scored in the top of the eigth from five errors to score Minter. The Tigers tallied their final run from a scrifice bunt from Edwin Drexler that drove in pinch runner Jarred Nauls. Drexler went 1-for-3 with the Tigers' only RBI.

Zach Moreau (0-4) took the loss after relieving Matt Mitchell. Moreau finished with three strikeouts in three innings on the mound. Mitchell struck out nine batters in 7 1/3 innings giving up two earned runs.

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - Dominiq Harris hit two home runs with runners on to lift Prairie View A&M Univeristy to a pair of wins against in-state rival, Texas Southern, on Saturday at Prairie View A&M Baseball Stadium.

PVAMU (19-16, 8-6) took the first game 6-3 before winning game two, 11-5, of the Southwestern Athletic Conference series.

In game two, Harris punched a three-run homer in the first and a two-run homer in the third inning to carry the Panthers offense.

Harris' three-run homer over the left-center wall gave PVAMU a 3-1 lead.

TSU (16-18, 8-9) scored one run in both the second and third innings to cut PVAM's lead, 4-3.

Harris responded blasting a shot over the left-field wall in the third inning to give the Panthers a 6-3 advantage. He finished 2-for-4 with five RBI and four runs scored. Trey Price added two RBI and Walter Wells scored two runs.

Stef Hernandez (3-3) picked up the win giving up six hits on the day.
Harris hit multiple home runs in one game for the first time in his collegiate career and finished the day with eight RBIs. The Panthers improved to 5-0 against Texas Southern in SWAC play.

Felix Gomez (1-6) was handed the loss giving up six earned runs in three innings of work. De'Mario Thibodeaux finished with two RBI for the Tigers going 2-for-5.

In the early game, the Panthers led 4-2 before adding a run in the fourth and seventh innings. TSU added another run in the top of the eigth to cap the final score, 6-3.

With the score knotted at 2-2. Harris helped PVAMU gain control after hitting a two-RBI single to score Brad Benes and Brett Valley. Harris finished with three RBI hitting 2-for-3.

Benes finished 3-for-5 manufacturing a triple in the fourth to score Valley. Valley scored three runs to lead PVAMU in the category.

Jonathan Mata (3-2) pitched a complete game recording two strikeouts while giving up three earned runs.

Robert Pearson (4-3) recorded the loss for the Tigers in 3 1/3 innings. He finished with three strikeouts giving up six hits and five earned runs.

Ellis Stephney and Jerry Ford II finished with two RBI apiece for TSU. Andrew Garza went 1-for-4 hitting a homer in the secomnd to give the Tigers their only lead of the game, 2-1.

@Murray State 16, Alabama A&M 4
BOX SCORE

MURRAY, Ky. - Alabama A&M University fell 16-4 to Murray State on Saturday at Reagan Field.

Josh Freeman (2-9) suffered the loss after giving up 10 runs, three earned, on seven hits over three innings.

AAMU (3-35) got on the board in the second inning as Julio Nunez delivered a single to left center, stole second and went to third on a passed ball. Cornelius Woods drove in the runner with a single down the left-field line.

AAMU was able to score two more runs in the third as Patrick Dodson drove in a run with a single to right center, before scoring on a Bradley Black single to center field.

The top three hitters in the Murray State (16-23) lineup combined to go 10-for-17 with nine RBIs.

Ty Stetson was a home run shy of the cycle as he went 3-for-6 with a double, triple, four RBI and a pair of runs scored. Brandon Elliott tied a career high by going 4-for-6 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored.

Brandon Eggenschwiler finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored.

The bottom of the Thorobreds lineup featured Dalton West going 2-for-3 with a RBI and three runs scored while Paul Ritzheimer was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and runs scored.

MSU answered in the bottom of the third inning and took advantage of a pair of errors to score seven unearned runs. MSU closed out the scoring by pushing across three runs in the eighth for the final tally.

Cashtyn DeLeeuw (3-1) earned the victory for MSU after allowing three runs on seven hits and two strikeouts over six innings.

@Samford 8, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff gave up five runs in the eigth inning to fall to Samford, 8-2, on Saturday at Joe Lee Griffin Stadium.

For UAPB (14-24), Dwayne Hysmith went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Dylan Calhoun also drove in a run for the Golden Lions, going 1-for-3 at the plate.

Kyle Schwartz (3-4) pitched 6.1 innings, giving up three runs on six hits to take the loss. Schwartz struck out eight batters, while allowing just two walks in the game. Stanten Jones, Grant Glass, Redmond Floyd and Humberto Zavala also saw time on the mound.

UAPB jumped on top first, plating two runs in the top of the second inning. Kirby Campbell walked to lead off the inning. After moving to second base on a sacrifice bunt, Campbell scored on a double by Hysmith for the game's first run. Hysmith then advanced to third base when Patrick Phillips reached base on an infield
single. Calhoun then singled to drive in Hysmith for a 2-0 UAPB lead.

C.K. Irby (6-3) overcame a slow start to earn the win on the mound for the Samford (21-19). Irby pitched 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out seven batters and allowing just one walk.

At the plate, Caleb Bryson led the Bulldogs, going 4-for-4 with two RBI. Christiaan Durdaller went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and an RBI, while Austin Allison went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Samford put its first run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs in the inning, Durdaller doubled to right-center field. Bryson then singled through the left side of the infield to cut the UAPB lead to 2-1.

The Bulldogs took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Irby walked to lead off the inning, but was then retired when Phillip Ervin reached base on a fielder's choice. Ervin then stole second base and Durdaller walked. Bryson then singled up the middle to drive in Ervin to tie the score at 2 -2. Tommy Corbin then drove in Durdaller with a sacrifice bunt to give Samford a 3-2 lead.

Samford pulled away with five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, Durdaller homered to center field for the inning's first run. Back-to-back singles by Corbin and Bryson, and a walk by Richard Greene loaded the bases. Allison then singled to drive in Bryson. Stone then singled to drive in Corbin, and Greene scored on the play on a UAPB error. Allison then stole third base and scored on another UAPB error for the final score.
