
Bringing the HBCU Experience to Mexico City!
The bright sun was shining upon us when we visited the Frida Kahlo Museo en la Casa Azul, Kahlo’s family home where she and her husband, Diego Rivera, lived and entertained guests. The house includes furniture, books, dinnerware, and decorative objects from the time when Frida lived there – in addition to about two dozen of her paintings and sketches. One of the coolest items on display was the custom-made easel she used when she was in a wheelchair that allowed her to use a crank that would move the painting up and down while remaining in her wheelchair. Her library was filled with books about Mexican history, international art, and socialist politics. Frida was a Communist and allowed Leon Trotsky to live in her home while he was in exile.
