Saint Augustine’s women win CIAA tourney opener (4899 hits)

CHARLOTTE — The Saint Augustine’s women overcame a seven-point first-half deficit to defeat Chowan 67-63 in their CIAA Tournament opener on Tuesday at Time Warner Cable Arena.

The Falcons advanced to face No. 1 seed Elizabeth City State at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the quarterfinals.

“One of the major adjustments that we’ve not done all year long is play five guards,” Saint Augustine’s coach Rachel Bullard said.

“And they stepped up to the plate. At this point, you have to put it all out there. Whatever’s going to work, you’ve got to roll with it and that’s what we did. We tweaked a couple of things that we do defensively. We stayed within ourselves, though. We just mixed up our defenses a whole bunch more.”

The Hawks, who finished the season with a 5-21 overall record, outshot the Falcons and won the rebounding battle as well. Chowan shot 27-of-62 from the floor for a 43.5 percent rate while Saint Augustine’s shot 23-of-56 for 41.1 percent. The Hawks snagged 44 rebounds compared to 38 for the Falcons.

The Falcons forced Chowan to turn the ball over 19 times in the contest, which they turned into 22 points.

“We didn’t really take advantage of the opportunities we had,” Chowan coach Patrick Mashuda said. “In the first half, we had a seven-point lead and I felt like we could have stretched that out more.”

Lincoln knocks off J.C. Smith

Lincoln (Pa.) earned itself a slice of history and a second game at the CIAA women’s tournament.

The Lions’ 50-46 win against J.C. Smith on Tuesday at Time Warner Cable Arena was their first-ever postseason victory as a Division II program. That fact wasn’t lost on the Lions (10-17), who celebrated with hugs after the final horn.

“We’ve written a lot of history at Lincoln for us this year,” Lions coach Jessica Kern said. “Not leaving after the first day means a whole lot to our school and our program.”

Lincoln guard Cynthia Johnson had a huge say in keeping the Lions out front, dropping a game-high 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting and seven rebounds.

Even with nine turnovers, Johnson came up with big shots when the Lions needed them to stay in front of the Golden Bulls (8-18), who finished with a losing record for the first time since the 1996-97 squad went 12-17.

“Cynthia had a great game for us tonight,” Kern said.

“She had a couple of tough games here where she didn’t let the game come to her, but she did tonight. She stayed in her comfort zone.”

J.C. Smith trailed throughout, but was within striking distance most of the way behind Kaylah Gholson’s 17 points. Lincoln advanced to play Fayetteville State at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the quarterfinals. Herb White
