
Richmond, VA…The CIAA® Faculty Athletics Representatives’ Second Annual Graduation and Retention Symposium will take place on April 3, 2013 at Virginia Union University, Henderson Center Rm. 10-12. This event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with lunch served in between panel discussions.
This year’s symposium, which is tailored for campus faculty athletics representatives (FARs), will include presentations by Dr. Cynthia Williams-Brown, FAR and Chair of the Physical Education Department at Winston Salem-State University and panels featuring Allie Kolezynski, CIAA National SAAC Representative and 2012 CIAA Woman of the Year from Chowan University; Barvenia Wooten-Cherry, Virginia Union University’s Head Women’s Basketball Coach and honoree on the NCAA Division II 40th Anniversary Team; Williams Hayes, Athletic Director of Winston-Salem State University; Sherese Parker, Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Services at Lincoln University (PA); Dr. Freddie Vaughns of Bowie State University, President of the CIAA FAR Association and Dr. Claudie Mackey, Professor of the School of Education and Psychology, FAR of Elizabeth City State University.
Presentation topics will include:
· Best Practices for Developing a Scholar-Athlete;
· Best Practices for Funding for 5th Year Students and Tutors, Prioritizing Schedules, & Developing a Missed Classes Policy;
· Tool’s for Academic Advisement;
The CIAA’s mission is to unite Historically Black Institutions which provide equal athletic opportunities for men and women in intercollegiate athletics. The conference serves to assist member institutions in maintaining the integrity of sports through enforcement of NCAA policies and conference regulations as an integral part of each institution’s total educational program.
The CIAA and its member institutions encourage academic practices that contribute to the overall personal growth and development of the student-athlete. The conference’s goal is to provide an environment that supports teaching, learning and friendly competition for student-athletes. The CIAA believes that the welfare of the student-athlete is most important.
