
Nearly a week of exciting events will culminate on Saturday, October 19, when Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough is inaugurated as Dillard University’s Seventh President in Lawless Memorial Chapel at 10 a.m.
On Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. in Georges Auditorium, Rev. Jim Wallis, a New York Times bestselling author, public theologian, speaker, and international commentator on ethics and public life will deliver the Brain Food Lecture to start the inaugural week events. Wallis recently served on the White House Advisory Council on Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships and currently serves as the vice chair of the Global Agenda Council on Values of the World Economic Forum. He has authored 10 books. His latest book, On God's Side: What Religion Forgets and Politics Hasn't Learned About Serving the Common Good (Brazos Press), was released in April 2013. His most recent books include: Rediscovering Values: A Guide for Economic and Moral Recovery; The Great Awakening: Reviving Faith & Politics in a Post-Religious Right America; and God’s Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn’t Get It. Wallis’ columns appear in major newspapers, including The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and Boston Globe. He frequently appears on radio and television as a commentator on CNN, MSNBC, Fox—on shows such as Meet the Press, and National Public Radio to name a few. He has taught at Harvard University and currently teaches a course on “Faith, Social Justice, and Public Life” at Georgetown University.
On the following evening, Oct. 18 at 8 p.m. in Georges Auditorium, Grammy® nominated singer, songwriter Ledisi and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra led by the acclaimed trombonist, Delfeayo Marsalis will join the Dillard University Choir to present “A Taste of New Orleans.” This musical extravaganza will include jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel, pop and a few other cultural traditions of the Big Easy.
On Sunday, Oct. 20 at 10 a.m., Rev. Walter L. Kimbrough, father of President Kimbrough, will deliver the keynote message during a worship service in Lawless Memorial Chapel. Rev. Kimbrough is the pastor of Columbia Drive United Methodist Church in Decatur, Georgia.
