I Never Thought College Would Hurt So Good (398 hits)

Ever thought anything could hurt so good?
According to Pamela Jewell, college does.

Jewell has just released her new book, “I Never Thought College Would Hurt So Good” under Jewell Enterprises, her own company. In the book, Jewell explores different scenarios and events that could possibly ruin a student’s college career.

“I felt I needed to discuss bad choices college kids make that they end up regretting, so future college kids could learn from them,” Jewell said.

Some of theses poor choices include not paying parking tickets, plagiarism, poor money management, gambling, credit card fraud and the list goes on. Jewell talks to HBCU Connect about her book and how it affects you.

How did you find HBCU Connect?

“I don’t remember but I was very impressed with the website, my goal is to help college students make better choices.”

Why did you write this book?

“I wrote the book to shed light on poor choices people make in school and how to avoid those choices. I also felt it was important to inform parents, as well as students, about the advantages of going to college. Earning a college degree will definately give you a competitive advantage.”

Why are HBCU students making these choices?

“They’re making these choices because they want everything to come easy, when you want quick and easy money there are consequences to that.”

Have you seen the consequences of their choices?

“I had friends and associates that were enrolled at Clark that made poor choices. Some of those poor choices resulted in probation and expulsion.”
“I made poor choices by maybe procrastinating, that was one of the main things that I did.”

So how did you choose the title of the book?

““Hurt So Good” means determination and perseverance will lead to rewards. It hurts good because there is a reward, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.”

What else ‘hurts so good’?

“‘Hurt So Good’ applies to many things in life from teaching to parenting to getting out of debt. I am writing a ‘Hurt So Good’ book to address each of these issues.”

Why is college important?

“Just being in college itself is a sacrifice. You become more marketable, and over time you make more money.”

How was your HBCU experience?

“It was a really wonderful experience, I thought that in attending an HBCU, the professors tended to be warmer, they tended to sort of keep up with their students more because the class sizes were smaller. They were more caring; professors would call if you missed class.” “With my experience as a graduate student at an HBCU, I found that my professors encouraged us to network with them.”

What do you plan to do in the future?

“All my books will fall under the ‘hurt so good’ category. Future books will be on determination and perseverance.”

Pamela Jewell is originally from Flint, Michigan and has been in Atlanta since the age of 12. She has been a middle school teacher for 11 years, she is 30-something and has a 9-yr-old daughter.

She received her bachelor’s in Education from Georgia State University, a master's degree from West Georgia College, an Education Specialist degree from Clark Atlanta University and she is presently pursuing a doctorate degree, which she will complete in 2006 at Argosy University in Sarasota, Florida.

“I don’t feel I have a need for another degree, but I am a lifelong learner. Learning is a lifelong continuous process, you should always enroll yourself in a class that you’re interested in,” she said.
