First things first, before you start packing and saying your last goodbyes to friends, save the date! Colleges love to bombard you with emails, instructions, news updates, mail, etc. Before you go make sure you know when deadlines are to sign up for classes, welcome week activities, and payment plans for housing and dining. You are your own person now, which can be empowering, but also intimidating. If you are headed across the country for school, a road trip away, or even a commuter, entering a new environment can be a little daunting so it is important to go to school already knowing what classes you are taking, when your payments are due, and having all your paper work already in line for that work study or other campus job. When you enter college, life-long friends, parties, midnight ice cream runs, and all-nighters all await you. It’s a lot easier making friends, running around for last minute items at Target or Bed, Bath, and Beyond, and getting assimilated into college culture when you have all your business taken care of.
Before you leave for college, know your social security number and have a license or state ID. You are officially an adult now so city curfews no longer apply – meaning you need some identification, and just a college ID won’t cut it! You are going to need your social security memorized eventually for work applications and other paper work throughout life, so might as well start now!
Lastly, if you haven’t already, have a send-off party before you go! There’s no better way to rake in the cash before you leave than inviting all of your family and friends, and their friends, and their friends…just kidding. A good way to generate some extra cash before you leave is to apply to a few scholarships. Before I left for school I received a solid $8,000 from five scholarships. But of course it’s always good to say goodbye to your loved ones, so have a party! After all they’ve waited your whole life to see you grow up and embark on the next journey in your life! PS: If you have a few jitters it’s normal; they’ll soon dissipate with all the exciting welcome week activities. And if you’re excited, you should be, it’s college!
