Alabama State University Spotlight: Lataisha Jackson (‘05) (2527 hits)


A two-time ASU graduate is being honored for her work as a legislator in the Mississippi House of Representatives.

The National Foundation of Women Legislators (NFWL) recently selected Alabama State University alumna Lataisha Jackson (‘05) as one of the group’s 2014 Elected Women of Excellence Award winners.

The award was established in 2013 as part of a 75th anniversary celebration honoring the hard work and dedication of women leaders across the country. Jackson is one of 41 women from 33 states to receive this year’s award, which will be presented during the NFWL’s annual conference in Philadelphia, Penn., Nov. 19-22.

“I am thankful for the consideration and nomination, and I am elated to accept the award in honor of all the elected women that paved the way for me,” said Jackson, who currently serves in the Mississippi House of Representatives.

Jackson was elected in April 2013 and is the youngest woman serving in the State House. She also is the first woman to be elected as representative for District 11.

Her platform focuses on education and economic development issues, along with helping to increase small business opportunities to people in the state of Mississippi.

“It is my desire to continue the efforts as an effective leader, “Jackson said. “I pray God continues to grace me as a leader both effectively and inspirationally as I continue my path as representative for the state of Mississippi.”

Jackson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English/language arts in 2005 and a Master of Arts degree in education leadership in 2007, both from Alabama State University.

Through annual educational and networking events, the National Foundation for Women Legislators supports elected women from all levels of governance. As a non-profit, non-partisan organization, NFWL serves as a forum for women legislators to be empowered through information and experience.
