MEC Students Selected to 2017 Division III Student Immersion Program (639 hits)

Two of Medgar Evers' student-athletes have been selected to attend the Division III Student Immersion Program in Nashville (TN) this spring. The two selected are senior Sciancia Metelus (Haiti) and junior Charlyn Jordon (St. John's, Antigua), both of whom are graduating this spring. These women are both members of the soccer team as well as the track and field teams. Both student-athletes are standouts in the classroom as well with each one having a GPA of at least 3.43.

The Division III Student Immersion Program was created in 2015 to bring 40 ethnic minority students to the NCAA Convention and expose them to Division III, its members and its governance process. The goal is to build a pipeline of talented ethnic minority candidates, with an interest in Division III coaching and/or administration, in an effort to ultimately diversify the division.

Charlyn is involved in many extra-curricular activities such as a club she helped create called "Voices for Self-Reliance through Business Development". "The objective being to get practice from what we learn in the classroom (in all areas). We strongly believe that we do not have to wait until we complete college to start our own businesses." said Jordon. Charlyn has many platforms used to create income such as a media network, where she also has her own show; a cell phone company; a food and distribution company; collaborating with Student Government Association for a coat drive for the holidays as well as handing out food during Thanksgiving.

After completing her Bachelor's Degree, she will continue her education to pursue a Masters in Finance as she seeks to become a Financial Analyst. Charlyn wishes to open forums and classes on financial literacy within minority communities. She is looking forward to making valuable connections with respected professionals as well as fellow student-athletes. This will be an experience that she can hold with her for years to come.

As far as Sciancia goes, she is interested in working as an athletic professional and she wishes to become a graduate assistant in the field of athletics to begin her journey within athletics. Attending the Student Immersion Program will be will allow her to make connections with other people in the athletics field as well as other peers who are interested in athletics. Sciancia has qualified for the ECACs in track twice and is also a member of SAAC on campus at Medgar Evers.

Metelus has also traveled to Cuba for CUNY's historic Goodwill tour of Cuba last May. While there she and the other student-athletes took part in a local youth clinic at the athletic training centers as well as visited local hospitals. She learned many things about the Cuban culture while she was there. Sciancia as well as Charlyn are both very involved when it comes to on-campus events, athletic events and volunteering at local churches handing out to food to the homeless and needy. Both are very grateful and appreciative of being selected to this program and will use it to enhance their career opportunities for the future.
