Recycle Tournament Kicks Off February 4 at Spelman (748 hits)

Spelman College is partnering with Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College on Saturday, February 4, 2017, to kick off the Atlanta University Center’s participation in RecycleMania, an eight-week, nationwide initiative among higher education institutions to collect recyclable materials.

On Saturday at 11:45 a.m., representatives with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Sustainability will join Spelman student Krista Montgomery, C’2017, a member of the College’s Environmental Task Force and Sustainable Spelman; Morehouse student Jared Mitchell, C’2018, with the Students Organized for Sustainability; Clark Atlanta student Leah R. Clark, C’2017, of the Living Green Club; and AUC administrators at the RecycleMania 2017 launch. That same day, members of the community can drop off recyclables such as paper, plastics, steel and aluminum cans, and textiles from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Spelman’s Milligan Building parking lot.

“Spelman, Clark Atlanta and Morehouse have previously partnered with the EPA to host AUC RecycleMania kickoff events,” said Art Frazier, Spelman director of Facilities Management and Service. “Each event has broadened awareness among the campus communities about recycling. Successful participation in RecycleMania supports the goal of all three campuses to reduce landfill waste.”

The collection goal of the AUC’s RecycleMania is 60,000 pounds in recyclable material. Shoes and clothes collected at the drive will be donated to charities and thrift stores worldwide via Charity Recycling Service.

Spelman, Morehouse and Clark Atlanta will be among more than 700 colleges and universities taking part in the tournament. According to RecycleMania, participating schools have recycled and composted more than 820 million pounds of material since 2001. At the conclusion of the competition, institutions will be judged on who can recycle the most materials, create the least amount of trash and produce the highest recycling rate per capita. In 2014, Spelman collected 15.549 pounds recycled per person and was ranked No. 80 in the national competition.
