Nearly two-dozen film majors in Clark Atlanta University's study abroad program are spending their spring break week in Paris, France. The group of 20 students and five faculty and staff chaperones departed Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Sunday, March 12. There are six student filmmakers on the excursion who are traveling outside the U.S. for the first time, including Alexia Johnson and Aaron Reid.
“I never thought I would see the day I would have the opportunity to go to Paris,” said Johnson, a sophomore from Atlanta, who hopes to use the global lessons from this trip to run her own business after graduation. “I am very excited that I am able to go with friends and Clark Atlanta University.”
Reid, 22, a senior mass media arts major from Atlanta, has dreams of starting his own film production company. He will be the first in his family to graduate from collge. “This is an amazing opportunity to gain hands-on experience while learning about foreign filmmaking at the same time,” he said. “Thanks to Clark Atlanta, I get to fully demonstrate my skill set while implementing all of the fundamentals CAU has instilled in me.”
While in Paris, the students will study Invisible Identities of the African Diaspora, a rigorous course taught by CAU professor April D. Lundy, M.F.A., which explores the work of ostracized black French filmmakers. Their academic work will culminate in the creation of two documentaries produced, shot and edited by the students under the tutelage of Lundy and legendary CAU film professor Dr. Herbert Eichelberger.
“This trip represents one of several innovative faculty-led programs designed to provide our students with an international experience,” said Gwen Wade, director of International Programs. She went on to say study abroad supports the institution’s goal to, “graduate globally prepared students.” Global competitiveness is also a key component of President Ronald A. Johnson's theme of "Lifting Every Voice."
“All students should try to incorporate a study abroad travel experience during this unique four-year period of their life,” said Dr. Danille K. Taylor, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. “This trip is a unique opportunity because it ties into the filmmaking class Professor Lundy’s professional development from two prior visits to Paris,” she continued.
