Morehouse College Celebrates 151st Founder’s Week Anniversary With Concert, Scholarship Gala (1273 hits)

Morehouse College will mark its 151st anniversary this week with a special lineup of festivities that will include alumni events, an 80s vs. 90s throwback concert featuring Tony! Toni! Toné!, and a speech by business and entertainment moguls who are among this year’s scholarship gala honorees.

Nearly 5,000 students, alumni, and community supporters are expected to attend Founder’s Week activities, honoring Morehouse’s founding in February 1867 as the Augusta Institute in Augusta, Ga. The week celebrates the College’s legacy of producing global leaders.

On Thursday, national award-winning social ethicist Dr. Gary Dorrien will speak about the Black Social Gospel tradition during the annual Founder’s Day Convocation in the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel at 10:45 a.m.

Throwback music takes over King Chapel Friday, during the 8 p.m. “Battle of the Decades: 80s vs. 90s” concert featuring Tony! Toni! Toné!, Ready for the World, Force MD’s, Troop, and Hi-Five. Tickets range from $45-$85. A Morehouse discount code on Eventbrite offers a $20 discount on ticket purchases.

On Saturday, the recipients of the coveted 2018 Bennie and Candle Awards—Ohio State professor William Theodore McDaniel, Silicon Valley executive Emmett Carson, Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-La), businessman William M. Lewis Jr., director Osborne “Oz” Scott, and businessman Robert F. Smith—talk about their careers and lives during “Reflections of Excellence,” hosted by WSB-TV journalist Tom Jones in the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center at 11 a.m. The event is free of charge and open to the public.

Then, at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, more than 1,400 alumni and community supporters will attend one of Atlanta’s most celebrated white-tie events, the 30th annual “A Candle in the Dark” Gala, a fundraising event at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta to support Morehouse College and student scholarships. The sold-out gala is Morehouse’s signature event for raising scholarship dollars. Past honorees have included such luminaries as Muhammad Ali, Sidney Poitier, Berry Gordy, Tyler Perry, Usher, and many others.

The 2018 Bennie and Candle Award honorees will be recognized for excellence in a variety of fields, including athletics, business, education, entertainment, government, law, military service, religion, and science and technology. Bennie Award recipients are accomplished graduates of Morehouse. (The award is named for noted educator Benjamin E. Mays, who served as president of Morehouse from 1940 to 1967.)

Closing events for Founder’s Week will be held Sunday, Feb. 18. The day begins with the “Founder’s Day Worship Service” at 11 a.m. in the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel. The service will be followed later by a special concert featuring the world-renowned Morehouse College Glee Club. The concert will be held at 4 p.m. at the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center.
