A group of Armenian judges and an Armenian professor visited the FAMU College of Law to learn about American jurisprudence on Friday. The group toured the law school campus and took part in a question-and-answer session with law professors Jeff Brown, Paige Carlos, Maritza Reyes and Interim Dean LeRoy Pernell.
The seven judges, professor and interpreter were hosted by the Rotary Club as part of the Open World Program, the first and only international exchange agency that offers bipartisan support to members of Congress in creating cultural exchanges for Eurasian leaders to witness democracy building in action. They spent a week in the United States receiving insight into several areas of law and law enforcement.
U.S. Attorney Chris Canova visited FAMU¡¦s campus last week to honor FAMU Police Chief Terence Calloway with a special service recognition award. Canova awarded Calloway for his ongoing efforts to positively impact troubled youth in areas ranging from Gainesville to Pensacola. Calloway has participated in more than 10 speaking engagements in recent months to inspire change in youth with a goal of setting them on a brighter path.
Vonda Richardson, FAMU's associate director of Cooperative Extension Programs, was honored and awarded the 2018 Thomas Monroe Campbell Award. She was among only three recipients in the nation honored with this award in 2018. Under Richardson's leadership, the Extension Program recently helped feed Gadsden County residents impacted by Hurricane Michael with hot meals. She also plays a vital role in providing free produce for FAMU's pantry for students and members of the community in need of food supplies.
Thomas Monroe Campbell was the first appointed Cooperative Extension agent in the United States in November 1906 and headed the first extension program as a field agent for USDA. According to College of Agriculture and Food Sciences Dean Robert Taylor, Ph.D., this award indicates that our Extension Program at FAMU is at the forefront of extension programs at 1890 land-grant universities in the nation, with Mrs. Richardson at the helm.¡¨
