1. Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I was born in a small town called Kankakee, Illinois; however, I grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Photo: What can I say, I love science! I was taught by some of the best scientists in the country. Thank you FAMU!
2. Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I choose an HBCU because all throughout elementary, middle and high school I was always the minority. I never really felt included and it was definitely evident that I was different.
I wanted to be amongst young educated individuals that looked like myself that were chasing and living out their dreams.
3. What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
I choose an HBCU because all throughout elementary, middle and high school I was always the minority. I never really felt included and it was definitely evident that I was different. I wanted be amongst young educated individuals that looked like myself that were chasing and living out their dreams.
I got much more than I had bargained for which was a tremendous blessing. Attending Florida A&M University was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
FAMU is where I discovered my voice!!! My abilities were not limited to the color of my skin, in fact I learned to value and appreciate the skin I was in. FAMU taught me to speak up, I was afforded the opportunity to work with some of the best and the brightest in my field, I was taught by some of the best professors, I was more than just a number... I was FAMULY....From high profile internships like Brookhaven¡¦s National Laboratory to working with the former Chief Financial Officer (Alex Sink)... FAMU played a major role in who I am today.
Did I mention, I am also legacy! I plan to pass this HBCU legacy down to not just my children, but their children and so forth.
4. "First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
Experiencing my culture at its best. From fun filled activities on the set, raids in the dorms, step shows and waking up to the roaring sounds of the ¡§Marching 100¡¨ the best band in the land!!!
I fell in love everyday I stepped foot on that campus!
5. Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Dr. Ray O¡¦neal, Dr. Ralph Turner, Dr. John West, Dr. Jackson, Dr. Latinwo, Dr. Jesse Edwards and the best ever Dr. James Boyer, there were so many that played a tremendous role in who I am today.
My professors were more passionate about my learning and education then I was. They pushed me to do my best and to not give up even when times were hard.
6. If you could only speak two sentences to the youth coming after you what would you say?
Dream ¡§Big¡¨ always... The sky is not the limit because there are footprints on the moon.
