Rival NCCU has sixth-best black college signing class
North Carolina A&T has the second-best recruiting class among Division I black college football programs according to a national website.
The Aggies, who won the last two HBCU national titles, trail only Southern in Boxtorow.com’s 13th annual rankings, which are based on research of media reports and recruiting boards.
The Aggies signed a pair of three-star North Carolina running backs in Shemar Thompson from Burlington Williams High and Cameron Hutchinson from Havelock. Thompson, the nation’s 94th-ranked player at the position and 60th best player in North Carolina, received offers from Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina and East Carolina.
Hutchinson was ranked the nation’s 169th best running back and received offers from Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, and Old Dominion.
A&T also landed former East Carolina quarterback Kingsley Ifedi, a Vance High graduate who redshirted in 2017 and played sparingly in 2018, as well as two-star receiver Prestige Edwards from East Mecklenburg High, who had an offer from Temple. The Aggies also signed South Mecklenburg tackle Jason Ivey, who had offers from West Virginia and Charlotte as well as Mallard Creek inside linebacker Jacob Roberts, a two-star prospect.
North Carolina Central earned the No. 6 class. New head coach Trei Oliver signed a trio of three-star prospects, including offensive tackle Michael Cartwright a 6-5, 295-pounder from Hialeah, Florida, who received offers from Nebraska, Temple, Pittsburgh, and Central Florida.
Other three-star signees are tight end/receiver Darrius Buchanan from Washington, D.C. and defensive end Nicholas Witherspoon from Greensboro Smith High, who had an offer from Temple.
Southern, which won the SWAC Western Division last year, ranked first in recruiting for the first time. The Jaguars, who return 17 starters, signed six three-star recruits, the most among HBCUs since the website started tracking.
The Jaguars’ top signees are defensive backs, including Bertrand Carrell a 5-10, 180-pounder who earned 11 FBS offers, including LSU, Arizona, and Missouri. Southern also added three-star recruits Anthony Shaffer as well as Joshua Tate, who had 10 offers including from Buffalo and South Alabama.
The Jaguars also signed five FBS transfers, most notably Purdue’s Chazmyn Turner (6-3, 265), who will have two seasons of eligibility. He had 62 tackles and four sacks in two seasons with the Boilermakers.
