Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. to present SC State first installment of $100,000 endowment (1824 hits)

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., (AKA) in partnership with the Educational Advancement Foundation, has pledged an endowment in the amount of $100,000 to SC State University as a part of the AKA-HBCU Endowment Fund initiative.

On Feb. 28, SC State president James E. Clark will join 31 other presidents of historically black colleges and universities at the AKA International Headquarters in Chicago, Illinois to accept the first $50,000 installment of each institution’s award.

“Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has implemented the AKA-HBCU Endowment Fund with the goal of investing in the future of our young people and the sustainability of our treasured HBCUs,” said AKA International President, Dr. Glenda Glover. “Our organization has pledged to donate a total of 10 million dollars towards the endowment, and we are honored to provide SC State the first $50,000 during our February event as we celebrate Black History Month and the legacies of all HBCUs.”

SC State, along with many HBCUs, has its challenges with scholarship funding. Funds from the AKA-HBCU Endowment Fund will support students through gap funding, which directly impacts student recruitment and retention.

The historic event will gather presidents from HBCUs across the nation and feature remarks from Glover, as well as a tour of the iconic and recently renovated Ivy Center International Headquarters in the Hyde Park neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago.

“SC State is very pleased to be a recipient of the $100,000 endowment from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. The AKA-HBCU Endowment Fund is an exceptional program that benefits deserving students who seek an education,” said Clark.

“We are ever so grateful to the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and the Educational Advancement Foundation for addressing a very critical need in our communities. As such, I look forward to joining the AKA organization in Chicago on February 28,” he continued.
