HOW DO WE CHANGE THE MENATILITY OF THE KIDS WITHOUT FIRST CHANGING THE MENTALITY OF THE PARENT(S)? (448 hits)

I was reading Dr. Glovers blog on gangs and the responses and it got me to thinking(like most of his blogs do, he's quite good at that); how do we educate the parents so they can do a better job at educating their kids? A lot of the responses talked about how the parents need to do a better job at parenting. No bones there. Parents do need to do a better job; but the sad truth is most parents aren't educated enough themselves to do better. A lot of the kids and young people today, sadly, are doing better than their parents did. How do we get the parents to value education, to decide to have better morals, and values, and make better decisions so they can then instill that same mentality into their children?

It's an imbalance of nature vs. nurture. The imbalance of who's pooring into you and what's eating you...

We need to get back to that mentality that it takes a village to raise a child. Plus, with children having babies before they've had a chance to mature and as a concequence of being thrust into a world of adult consequences and responsibilities, it's a wonder any child born to that stands half a chance.

It must start at home, with with the age of mothers (and fathers) getting younger and younger and education getting treated less and less important to who they are and are becoming, it's no wonder why things are in this state.

Legs are opening faster and more than books. And ding a lings are dipping far more into female crevices than in dictionaries. It sad. ...just sad. I have two daughters and I wonder what it will be like for them. Little boys are groomed more by the streets, tv and music than they are by parents that I wonder who's going to be there to husband my girls. Girls are raised by media and print images that give them image complexes and the men that plant them in their mothers walk off into the sunset faster than the egg can make it down the fallopian tube that it's no wonder they look for love in all the wrong places. I wonder if the girls who are raised well...with morals, values and standards they won't apologize for will be found by a man that takes them seriously and doesn't attempt to treat as the world does.

And society has dang near taken God out of EVERYTHING. And then wonder why everything is going to hell in a hand basket with a bow tied around it singing, "Yipppeeeee!"

I mean, c'mon. Can we get back to our roots?

Blessings..

I must admit that I'm a bit surprised at some of the responses. Reading the responses and Dr. Glovers blog and how they all talked about how the parents need to do a better job. My question is, how do you expect the parents to do a better job when they don't know better themselves?

Also Dee, your response was right on point. The problem is the parents of the generation we are speaking of is just as lost as their kids. How do we reach the parents so the parents can reach the kids?

Mister Johnson, how can a parent do for themselves if they don't know what to do in the first place? I'm not pin pointing any specific person and saying it's their responsibility to change or educate anyone. What I'm saying is as a whole, as a community it's our responsibility to give these young parents the education they for some reason never received. How can you expect them to make the decision when they don't know they have the option to make that decision to begin with?

No, they are not on this site; you are right about that. Those who are on this site are the one's who have the ability and education to start the ripple that would bring about that change. They do not have to be on this site to get the information if people stop waiting for someone else to start fixing the problems plaguing our communities and take the steps to do it themselves. This blog and ones like it will only miss the point if people who have access to the information and the power for action continue to do nothing.

Ebone,

I LOVE THIS POST:0)

I suggest that we start anew. Teach the babies, kids, teens, and young adults that it is Okay to outgrow your parents. Let them know that we know we are imperfect. Teach them to expect to do better than we have done. Let them know that…yes…there is a contest between the parent and child…and I want you to play to win. Hell, I’m stacking the deck so you can be better than me.
Teach them to not just do what we’ve done…do more than we every imagined could be done. Dare our kids to dream the impossible!

Irma, whose making you the center of their lives? I don't get your responses. Why would you bring GOD or prayer into the discussion in the context in which you have? It seems as if you have some sort of personal vendetta. These are not your first snide comments, I'm pretty sure they will not be your last. I just say there is no point for some of your comments. We are here to exchange ideas and try to work and improve our community, nothing else.

Also, it's good that you tutor young children. That's much needed. I'm not going to give you a list of my accomplishment or my dedication to the improvement of my people. There's no point. Trust me when I tell you, I do way more than tutoring children and plan on continuing to do so until the day I die.

Mister Johnson I agree with you. You are right, we cannot force anyone to do what they don't want to do. I just think more would choose to do so if they were given the option.

Dr. Glover

I'm glad you enjoyed the post :-D. You are correct in what we need to do. Now all that is left is figuring out how to implement it.

Ebone, when a person does not believe in God, it gets rather easy to lose one's way when one tries to introduce God into a discussion.

I guess the United States has as Rev J. Wright predicted, been damned or all those daily news reports on the record loss of 'homes' are false? If now having no "h-O-M-E is the problem. And, an even better problem is going to be is White millionairs are loosing their homesas they have small children....Do I see a brand new religion(s) coming in with a new 'Absolute Truth" to save a new form of Christainity as I know all of these people do not not pray to the God who takes care of every thing. Or, do we go back to the old stand bys like, "it is God's will"? I am sure those in jail waiting to go court for causing some of this homeless wish that the courts would accept this as God's Will!

Don't worry no one do not have to tell me how any one who speaks less than the Absolute Truth is wrong. so do not wast your energy on me, OK?

few might get these examples as related to a parent and a child. Ever identical twins have major differences.....environment has a great affect on our mental/physical ability .Because, life it self is a process of changes moment to moment.Which as I see it the child is independant of the parent as an individaul. I do not like pineapple but my mom did.

It is so funny that prayer answers every thing but things we do not understand, like others have a right to speak their minds. May be stoping changing what others say and finding out that we can not accomplish this feat and just move on could go a long way in getting prayers for a better life be answered.

I believe this to be true, If you by accident sit on a red hot stove, you will not turn right around and sit right back on that hot stove. If not what is classified as being insame. So please, get on with your lives and stop making me the center of it. I hope that John Mccain can do the same when it comes to Obama and what he:say and do trying to bring about CHANGE.

There must always be some one sending a message and some one receiving the message. There is no rules that one should understand, agree, like the message that is sent or received. Has a lot to do with what is the meaning of freedom...Experiences...environment....Open minds....closed minds...learning somethings new....sciance...life being a process that changes with every moment, different contacts, different physical, different mental make ups...equality...civil rights...choices and so on and so forth!!!!!!
